Alexa Ranking Update

Alexa

I am always excited to see my ranking move up in the Alexa ranking. Alexa updates on a regular bases every 4 1/2 days, however this update is going into day 8. This is not a bad thing as your site is still receiving traffic each day.

Alexa has been a great tool for me to measure not only my site, but other sites. It allows me to see what sites I want to advertise on based on that sites ranking. The add-on Sparky is a must have for any blog site that is looking to advertise on other web sites. More on add-ons below.

Add-ons

Alexa the “Web Information Company” has been around for a long time (1996). I recommend that you download “Sparky” at Alexa. This will show you every sites ranking you browse to. The add-on is free and is located in your browser status bar and it’s non-intrusive with your web browsing.

My results so far in just 4 weeks

1/23 - 12,345,537
1/31 - 3,799,956
2/4 - 1,978,769
2/6 - 1,530,879
2/12 - 1,098,281
2/13 - 714,467
2/18 - 501,992
2/20 - 411,877
x/xx - Guess our next ranking and will run your ad for 7 days!

Alexa Info:

Alexa currently gathers approximately 1.6 Terabytes (1600 gigabytes) of Web content per day. After each snapshot of the Web, which takes approximately two months to complete, Alexa has gathered 4.5 Billion pages from over 16 million sites. This information tells us that Alexa ranking is from 1 to 16+ million.

    Sue,

It really is fun, but you really have to have Google Analytics to see your bounce rate. It’s important to keep that under 50%.

    Wow you replied fast!

I am thinking you’re right, but since 411K my site has increased traffic by 47% in 7 days. I would love to be in the 200K range, but that will happen by 3/8.

DTI I would love that and I would think the way the traffic trend has been the last 8 days it could be possible.

Why is it important to have less than 50% bounce rate. I can’t achieve that with EC card drop and run …

    Guess: 388,457

    Closest person wins?

    Traveller,

Bounce rate means they’re leaving your site quickly, more like drop and run. Less than 50% says that 1/2 your visitors are staying long enough to see what your site is about. I am not sure what the time frame is, but will look it up.

Thanks for the info. I knew how Alexa works but I was not aware of the 16 million sites. All of a sudden I feel a bit better about my 450k. My ranking has also not budged (up or down) in the past week.

It’s been 10 days with no update. This is the longest an update has taken since I started tracking Alexa in mid December.

Hi - I like when people talk about Alexa. It may not be the be-all and end-all but at least one can call it a representative sample, though in truth it probably skews a bit to the tech-savvy.

That said - I think bounce rate is misleading for true blogs. You guys have everything laying there on the home page, and unless you have jumps for your posts, you are always going to have a high bounce rate.

For this site - I learned more that I could have imagined without ever leaving the home page. So technically, I would have been a bounce if I had not made this comment. but I read your post, so I would go by Time on Site rather than bounce rate. If they are reading, then even if they only see one page, they will probably come back for more tomorrow.

    Just my 2 cents

If your alexa rank isn’t moving, try putting the alexa widget on your site. That way everyone who visit’s your site sends a ‘vote’ to alexa. This will increase your ranking.

I went from 3+million to just over 500K in 2 weeks. Without the widget, you solely relying on your visitors having the alexa toolbar installed on their computers (which they dont). The toolbar also sends a ‘vote’ to alexa when they visit your site.

All in All…put the widget on there if you care about your ranking.
