Entrecard Community Sinking

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 | Tech Corner with 38 Comments

Overview:

Entrecard as I refer it “Drop and Run” concept where you can drop your card on others to earn credits to advertise your 125×125 widget. You can learn more by visiting Entrecard.com.

Issues:

I am finally free! I dropped 300+ cards for 67 days straight only to realize no matter how many credits I had it was hard to get a spot on a quality blog. If I tried to advertise on the low hanging fruit the ad would sit in pending forever. This was a major issue for me.

There’s a handful of quality blogs that are part of this community who I consider friends. The rest are just out for themselves and will do what it takes to get “Drop and Run” traffic. I know these are facts as many of the blog sites I have visited hardly ever get comments on their latest blog.

The forums are a free for all and the biggest topics are Stumbles, EC’s for Sale, and Contests. It’s a tired community with little or no originality. The owner/s can hoot all they want, but the fact is that EC may have 5000+ members, but how many are active members? I am guessing that 25% if that are really active. This activity includes advertising, dropping, forum activity and accepting ads.

I can go on about the downtime, and issues with the site in the first 4 Months, but you get the point.

Change is a good thing:

I am glad that I broke this habit. I noticed that my traffic really didn’t fall off that much, maybe 22%, but I can live with that. I also noticed that my bounce rate dropped by 8%. I now have more time to be creative and explore new opportunities. I must say Entrecard was addicting, but it’s an old habit. I still visit the Entrecard forums, but my activity is less than half of what it used to be. I am no longer a drop master!

Closing:

Two things. Most of you need to stop writing about stuff that has already been published it’s boring! There are many of you who mention John Ch*w and C*w. Who gives a shit, they don’t pay your bills, but you are helping them with theirs.

TechJaws Opportunity

Monday, April 21st, 2008 | Tech Corner with 10 Comments

I recently purchased the domain and web space. I have been planning and putting together a strategy on how I can leverage TechJaws.com to truly be a world class service to help new webmasters and blog authors to gain popularity. I first thought of paying for the professional version of Pligg. What’s Pligg? It’s a clone type social bookmark portal just like Digg. You can submit new blogs for visitors to review. There are many other features this social bookmark is capable of.

The Plan for Techjaws:

To create an online company with highly skilled members that have one of the following skills; PHP coding, Graphic creation (Photo Shop Preferred), Marketing, Quality Assurance and Professional Writing.

Benefits of becoming part of this online company:

1. Percentage of ownership

2. Percentage of profits

3. Self promotion

If you have any of the skills listed, and most importantly can dedicate yourself to this effort 6 to 12 hours per week than this could be a great opportunity. You need a team to make a company successful.

If you have the time and the skill set please contact me at boscony@yahoo.com. Please include the following information in your email;

Subject Line: TechJaws Inquiry

1. Your full name

2. Phone number

3. City/State

4. Your skills

5. Examples of your work

6. Why you think you would be an asset to this effort.

If you’re selected to join TechJaws.com you will need to sign a legal NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement). This document protects TechJaws from sharing, distributing, or copying the properties owned by TechJaws.com. We will also incorporate Techjaws as an S-Corp. This will provide each team member stock options and a percentage of ownership.

I am looking to bring on investors to help launch and grow TechJaws.

ONLY SERIOUS, DEDICATED INDIVIDUALS NEED TO APPLY

Why do you have a blog?

Saturday, April 19th, 2008 | Tech Corner with 8 Comments

What’s your motive for managing a blog?

a. I am hoping it will be among the top 100 blogs so I can make money on ads

b. I like knowing that I have a web presense

c. Everyone else has one

If you answered (a) than you’re among the majority who are trying to gain popularity to monetize a blog. The blogsphere is competitive and extremely hard to become an elite blogger. There’s many household names we all are aware of, but I don’t understand why. The content these top bloggers write about are articles or news that has already been authored. All they’re doing is re-writing what has already been written.

How can we stand out?

Controversy, controversy and more! Write with no fear, and expect negative feedback. You need to handle that feedback in a way that the visitor will return to see what new blog you have published. I can tell you people feed on this like a search engine crawler feeds on popular keywords like a slice of pizza.

Don’t be boring. I don’t care about who and why you’ve written about. If you’re bashing someone who we all know and they deserve the bashing than go for it.

Make sure you have some facts or you may be called out on your blog. You never want to look like a dumbass. You need to write with confidence and stand tall!

A Day Later

Thursday, April 17th, 2008 | Tech Corner with 12 Comments

I have a great passion for blogging just like I do helping people. I know yesterday seemed like a shot in the heart from the latest update from Alexa. This morning I woke up and realized that hey, what I accomplished in 11 weeks was something I could only dream of. The ranking is important because it acts as a gage or report card on how well your traffic is flowing to your blog.

There’s so many factors involved in this change that I don’t care to share at this time. I am still searching more details, but I can tell you a few things that helped you or not.

1. If you were ranked 200K and had a Google PR of 1/10 to 3/10 your ranking moved up.
2. If you had a rank like mine at 80K and no Google PR you went down in rank (199,988).
3. The blogs that had their ranks go down went down approx. 140%.
4. The Alexa change is not over, far from it. Data is still updating, so don’t panic.

My only advice is to continue what your doing, and not let some rank take the wind out of your sails. Keep the faith and passion alive as you know you’re making gains in the blogsphere. I love Stumbling and helping others get noticed, and I will continue to do so.

My only request is bookmark me, stop by, say hey. You can still drop a card on me as well.

Wait! I have one other request. Can we stop talking about John Fucking Ch*w and John Fucking C*w! I will not mention their names entirely, because crawlers love them like pizza, here’s your damn liver crawler!

Peace!

The New Alexa Rankings

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 | Tech Corner with 9 Comments

Have you noticed your ranking went the other way? Yes it did. We were ranked at 80K and were hoping we would break into the 70K barrier. Alexa has changed their overall ranking. I for one think it’s a great update, and really puts things into perspective. Here’s the good news! The sites that have a Google PR will more than likely move up in rank! The sites that have a relatively high bounce rate with no Google PR rank will move down in rank. The sites that claim there ranking is this and that, including me, will now be more humble.

Alexa Statements:

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes for several months and are excited to announce that our new Alexa Rankings system is available.

When Alexa began displaying rankings in 1998 it was with the goal of showing Alexa Toolbar users how popular any given site was within the Alexa community. We generated the rankings through an analysis of Internet usage by people who use the Alexa Toolbar. Since that time we’ve been delighted to see that the Alexa Rankings have become a yardstick by which website popularity is measured. We are grateful to the thousands of people who come to Alexa.com each day to check the Alexa Rankings.

In recent months we’ve heard from our Alexa users that understanding Internet usage beyond Alexa Toolbar users was increasingly of interest. Ask and you shall receive!

We listened to your suggestions, and we believe that our new rankings system is much closer to what you asked for. We now aggregate data from multiple sources to give you a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users.

You gave us many other suggestions as well, and we are working hard to implement them. We won’t tell any secrets just yet, but you can expect to see new features rolled out over the coming weeks and months.

Below are a few common questions we anticipate from the Alexa community, along with our answers.

My site’s ranking has changed. Was it wrong before?

Your ranking wasn’t wrong before, but it was different. Alexa toolbar users’ interests and surfing habits could differ from those of the general population in a number of ways, and we described some of those possible differences on our website. While the vast majority of sites’ rankings were unaffected by such differences, we’ve worked hard on our new ranking system to adjust for situations in which they could matter.

The new rankings should better reflect the interests and surfing habits of the broader population of Web users.

Why are the long range graphs gone? I can only get 9 months of historical data.

We are recalculating historic traffic data and will continue to add it over the coming weeks. We apologize for the inconvenience, but should have several years of data back on line shortly.

Will you change the rankings again?

We are constantly working to ensure that we provide the most useful data that we can. We will continue to fine tune our algorithms but don’t foresee any additional big changes. If you think something is amiss please let us know.

I liked the old rankings better. Are they still available somewhere?

We liked the old rankings as well. However, we developed the new system in response to the huge number of requests we got from users like you, and now that it’s done we like it even better. We hope you will too.

We think that having more than one ranking system at a time would be confusing, so we have removed the old rankings.

Do you want to know what I think about this?

Definitely. We’ve been collecting suggestions and ideas for months now, and would love to hear more. If you have thoughts on what we’ve done so far, or ideas on what we should do next, please share them with us.

Quantcast.com this is what it’s all about! This is what web rankings should be!
